Here’s something we haven’t talked about in ages: should women unbutton their fit when they sit (and then button it once again when they stand)? Years ago, when I did Mock Trial, that’s what I was taught by my (male) advisors since that’s what guy are supposed to do. (There are a great deal of fit button rules for men, actually!) however when we last took a poll on it, visitors stated they either hadn’t heard of the sit/stand rule (33%), or stated it depends upon the fit (44%) since some are meant to always be buttoned. (We had linked to this fit (maybe our very first ever fit of the Week?!) as an example of the type of fit that stays buttoned… interestingly, I haven’t seen a fit like that in what feels like forever, so it will definitely be back in style in the next 3 years.)

Now that double-breasted blazers are having a moment, though, let’s discuss. personally I’ve always discovered the double-breasted blazer tricky since I believe it commonly looks vastly much better while buttoned — it somehow seems as if there’s as well much fabric, awkwardly hanging since of the weight of the buttons — however perhaps that’s me. (Although: Angie at YouLookFab agreed with me!) However: on me, I believe a double-breasted blazer looks completely stupid if I sit down with it unbuttoned — it has a tendency to gape at the buttons as well as lapels, if it’s even comfortable to sit in while buttoned at all.
(The plaid blazer above is a excellent example, since they’ve pictured it both open as well as closed – I feel like most of the styling for unbuttoned double-breasted blazer has the design putting a hand in her pocket or otherwise ruining the line of the blazer. Thoughts?)
So readers, do tell: in general, do you feel like there are rules around when double-breasted blazers should be buttoned (e.g., standing), vs. unbuttoned (e.g., sitting)? In a wider sense, do you acknowledge any type of rules around when to button or unbutton your blazer?
